Directions;

  • Weigh out the distilled water in phase A into a heat safe beaker.

  • In a separate heat safe beaker combine all the ingredients in phase B.

  • Tare scale and place your beaker with phase A on the scale and take note of how much it weighs. We will be heating it up and some of the water will evaporate. We will need to replace that water after we heat it up.

  • Fill a pan with about an inch or so of water and place it on your stove top over medium high heat.

  • Cover both beakers with some aluminum foil and place into the pan with water. This is called a water bath.

  • Heat until all of phase B is melted and both phases are around the same temperature.

  • Remove phase A from the heat and place back on to your scale and add back in any water that evaporated.

  • Now you can remove phase B from the water bath and pour phase A into phase B and mix with an immersion blender.

  • Let phase A/B cool to 100°F / 40°C and then add in the phase C ingredients and mix in between each one. At this time you can also use a liquid water soluble skin safe dye to color the scrub. The pumice did end up making the product very dark, so account for this.

  • Cover and let sit overnight before pouring into jar.

  • When you first make it, it will be very fluid. After a couple days the scrub will thicken.

Benefits of Each Ingredient;

Emulsifying Wax NF - all in one emulsifier. Blends the oil and water together and thickens scrub.

Shea Butter - emollient and adds a bit of viscosity to scrub.

Coconut Oil - emollient and will thicken the scrub if coconut oil is a solid in your climate.

Cetyl Alcohol - helps thicken scrub and is an emollient

Stearic Acid - helps thicken scrub and is an emollient

Pumice - very mild exfoliant is almost a powder

Arrowroot Powder - not 100% sure why it’s being used, but I’m thinking it can help with thickening the product and maybe bringing down the greasiness of this scrub since its just oil soluble ingredients.

Liquid Germall Plus - preservative

Substitutions;

substituting ingredients will change the final feel, viscosity, and overall effect of final product. percentages and formulating procedure may need to change with substitutions. these substitution suggestions are just suggestions and have not been tested to work.

Emulsifying Wax NF - Olivem 1000, Ritamulse SCG / EcoMulse, or any other all in one emulsifier that also thickens.

Shea Butter - mango butter or another butter of choice but if you use a thicker butter like cocoa butter or kokum it will make this scrub thicker.

Coconut Oil - a liquid oil and you might want to use a bit more, maybe 1% more emulsifying wax or cetyl alcohol since coconut oil is a solid at room temperature (70°F)

Cetyl Alcohol - Cetearyl Alcohol, Behenyl Alcohol, Stearic Acid, or just use more Emulsifying Wax NF.

Stearic Acid - Cetearyl Alcohol, Behenyl Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol, or just use more Emulsifying Wax NF.

Pumice - Bamboo Stem Powder

Arrowroot Powder - tapioca starch or just leave out

Liquid Germall Plus - any water soluble preservative; e.g. Euxyl PE 9010, Geogard ECT, Euxyl K 903, Tristate Eco, Geogard 221 Optiphen Plus (I hate using optiphen plus in emulsions though because it can break emulsions easily) Euxyl K 903 can sometimes make the pH to low for me, so keep that in mind if you use that. Tristate Eco and Geogard ECT have a strong almond scent.

Fresh Fruit Slices Fragrance Oil - any fragrance oil of choice.
