How to Convert a Formula from Percents to a Recipe in Grams | Formulating for Beginners

Formula is the first thing you create for your product and it’s written in percents & always adds up to 100%

Batch size is the total amount of product you want to make. (This is usually in grams)

Recipe is in grams and you create it after writing the formula and after choosing your batch size.

I’m going to show you 4 methods you can use to transfer any Formula into a Recipe. Here is the formula we will be using for this demonstration.

Phase A (water phase)

Phase B (oil phase)

Phase C (cool down phase)

First Method

Turning a formula into a recipe can be as easy as switching all of the percent signs to grams. If you did this you would end up with a 100 g batch of lotion. So you would use 62.4 g of distilled water 7 g of glycerin 15 g of jojoba oil and so on, to create a 100 g batch.

Why use Grams?

You may be wondering why I am using grams? I’ve had people tell me that they want to use ounces. The reasons we are using grams is because we work with pretty small measurements, such as the 0.5 grams of vitamin E. That would be way too small to weigh out accurately in ounces. I mean you could do it, but it’s way easier to use grams. Grams give you a much more accurate way of measuring and also it's the universal measurement that every skin care formulator uses around the world.

Second Method

Now let's say you want to make a 700 gram batch. How would you do this?

The first thing we want to do is figure out how much distilled water we need for the 700 g batch. If you take a look at the formula again it calls for 62.4% distilled water. You could just Google “what is 62.4% of 700?” To get your answer, Which equals 436.8.

Third Method

Now let's say you don't want to google it and you actually want to know how to do the math let me explain.

For this example we will be looking at 62.4%

  • You need to move the decimal forward two spots.

  • So now you have 0.624

  • Then, you will multiple that number by your batch size. Your batch size is the total amount of product you want to make. For this example it’s 700 grams.

  • 0.624 x 700 = 436.8

  • So this means we need 436.8 grams of distilled water for a 700 gram batch.

Lets do this again with the 7% glycerin

Move the decimal 2 spaces forward - 0.07

Then multiply 0.07 x 700 = 49

& now just do this with the rest of the formula.

Fourth Method

You could also use a batch size calculator if you prefer that.

It’s that easy!

Professional skin care formulators write formulas before creating a recipe. So if you wanna make products just like the professionals, you need to understand how to turn formulas into recipes. You also need to know how to write your own formulas. I explained to you guys how to do that in a previous post. So if you wanna see how we came up with this formula, then go watch this video.
