Magic Color Changing Bubble Bath

ree
  • Fun Idea for a formula, but it worked better in a smaller portion of water than it did in the  bath tub. I mean, it worked, it just wasn’t as noticeable of a color change as when I did the test batches in a bucket of water instead of a bath tub. Still, I think this is a fun idea that can inspire others, so I want to share it.

  • I recommend you have a strong knowledge of pH to make this product as this product is all about color shifting depending on the pH. I don’t go into detail about pH here so go check out my post on pH. I also don’t go into detail about preservatives in this post, but that is also something you should understand. Learn about preservatives HERE.

What’s the Secret to the Magic?

ree

Butterfly Pea Flowers contain anthocyanins, which is a natural pigment found in many plants. After infusing Butterfly Pea Petals in water, you an watch the pigment change color depending on pH. Here is a Video going into more detain about Butterfly Pea Flowers.

Green - Basic (pH: 8.5 - 14)

Blue - Neutral to slightingly basic (pH: 7 - 8)

Purple - Slightly Acidic (pH 6)

Pink - Acidic (pH 5 - 1)

Step 1 - Making the Butterfly Pea Infused Water

Formula;

100 Gram Recipe;

Directions;

  1. In a clean sanitized container, heat your distilled water. I did this using a hot plate, but you can do the water bath method. Heat until your water is 70–80°C (158–176°F). (How to make water bath: Fill a pan with about an inch of water and place it over your stove top on medium heat.)

  2. Using a tea bag, or some kind of infuser. Here is what I used. Put the Butterfly Pea Petals in the infuser and place in your hot water.

    ree
  3. Let infuse for 20-30 Minutes.

    ree
  4. Remove infuser and let cool.

  5. If not using immediately, add a preservative or place in the fridge and use within 1-2 days.

Step 2 - Dying Butterfly Pea Infused Water

ree

This step is optional, but I wanted my bubble bath to be a vivid green. Naturally, you would think to just raise the pH to make the Butterfly pea infused water Green. But, instead I decided to add a Yellow Water Soluble Colorant to the Blue Butterfly Pea Water so it would turn green. I absolutely loved the color! If you want to keep yours blue you can. Just keep in mind, what ingredients you will be using to make your bubble bath, as this can also adjust the pH and shift the color. To learn more about how pH works, Watch this video HERE. I will not be going into detail about pH in this post.

Step 3 - Making Bubble Bath

ree

Keep in mind while making the bubble bath that the ingredients you add can shift the pH. For example, Decyl Glucoside has a pH of around 11-12.5, if you use too much of this it will raise your pH. Aloe Vera Powder can lower your pH, ECT. So consider all of this when making adjustments to the formula. Mine stayed Green even after mixing it with all these ingredients.

Bubble Bath Formula;

Phase A

Phase B

Directions;

  1. In a clean sanitized container, combine all ingredients in phase A and mix. You can stop here, if you would like, and replace the phase B ingredients with distilled water if you want  to keep your bubble bath a liquid. If you want to thicken your bubble bath, continue with phase B.

    ree
  2. Combine both ingredients in phase B to make a slurry.

  3. Slowly pour phase B into phase A while mixing.

    ree
  4. If there is lots of lather, let your bubble bath sit overnight, (cover with Plastic Wrap) before pouring into your bottle. I used these Potion Bottles from amazon to the Halloween Vibe. Use whatever bottle or container you would like that is air tight.

Step 4 - Make Activator

ree

This is where the magic happens…,,

This activator contains citric acid, which has a low (Acidic) pH. Adding this to the green bubble bath, will turn your bath an Orangish Pink color.

Let me explain…

The Butterfly Pea Infused Water is blue, but I added yellow to turn it Green. (Basically it’s just a blue water, dyed green because I added yellow.) But once the pH is lowered and the Butterfly Pea water turns from blue to pink, we now have a mixture that is Pink, with a yellow dye added making it an Orangish shade.

ree

How to use;

Fill tub with water and pour bubble bath in tube under the running water. Stronger running water and more agitation to the water make bigger and more bubbles.

Once you are ready to shift your bath from Green to an Orange, pour in your activator and watch the magic transformation.
