Formula
Phase A
27.5% Oil of choice (I used Sunflower Oil)
5% Shea Butter
Phase B
Phase C
4% Glycerin
Phase D
50% Sugar
1.5% Optiphen
1% Fragrance (I used Hello Sugar)
1,000 gram Recipe
Phase A
275 g Oil of choice (I used Sunflower Oil)
50 g Cromollient SCE
50 g Shea Butter
Phase B
Phase C
40 g Glycerin
40 g Polysorbate 20
Phase D
500 g Sugar
15 g Optiphen
10 g Fragrance (I used Hello Sugar)
Directions;
Combine all ingredients in phase A. Cover with foil and place in a water bath. (To make a water bath, fill a pan with an inch or so of water and place on a stove top on medium heat.)
Once phase A is all melted, remove from heat.
Put on your respirator before adding in phase B. Silica Dimethyl Silylate is a free flowing powder and goes everywhere! & you don’t want to breathe it in. So do this in a well ventilated room too.
Mix the Silica Dimethyl Silylate into phase A. It will seem like it doesn’t want to mix in, but if you keep mixing it eventually will.
You will notice chunks are now left in the oils. This is fine. Let it sit for a few hours or overnight before adding in phase C.
The next day phase A/B should now be a smooth gel.
Before adding in the phase C ingredients you need to first mix the glycerin and polysorbate 20 together before adding it in with phase A/B.
Mix until everything is combine and now you can add in your coloring of choice. I used a blend of Bright Yellow Raincoat Mica & Radioactive Neon Green to get this gorgeous green color. (You can add more coloring after sugar is added, the sugar will lighten it up)
Next add in the Optiphen and Fragrance, followed by the Sugar & mix well until everything is combine. (Add in more coloring if desired)
You can jar up your scrub immediately or store and jar up later.
Benefits of Each Ingredient;
Oils - Moisturizes the skin and acts as the base of the scrub
Cromollient SCE - Creates a milky effect when scrub comes into contact with water
Shea Butter - Moisturizes skin
Silica Dimethyl Silylate - thickens the oils
Glycerin - humectant that hydrates the skin
Polysorbate 20 - thickens up when it’s mixed with glycerin and is a solubilizer
Sugar - Exfoliator
Optiphen - Preservative
Substitutes;
Oils - any oil or emollient esters of choice should work
Cromollient SCE - you can leave out or try PEG 40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil
Shea Butter - any butter of choice
Silica Dimethyl Silylate - no sub
Glycerin - Propanediol might work
Polysorbate 20 - Polysorbate 80 might work
Sugar - you can try salt or any other exfoliating ingredient like jojoba pearls, but sugar is the best option here.
