Easy DIY Brown Sugar Exfoliating Body Scrub

Bramble Berry recently released their Winter Escape Fragrance Collection and they sent me them to try. My favorite was the Maple Almond Fragrance Oil. It smells so delicious! I instantly wanted to make a brown sugar scrub with it because the scent goes so well. I’ve been wanting to make a brown sugar scrub for a while now and figured this was the perfect opportunity. This is an extremely simple scrub, but it’s perfect for the up coming winter season, at least for those in the Northern Hemisphere. Brown sugar is such a soft sugar so it makes this scrub feel extremely soft as well. It will offer a more mild exfoliation compared to white granulated sugar. What are your thoughts on brown sugar scrubs? Have you tried one before?

Formula

Phase A

  • 10% Cetyl Alcohol

  • 5% Cocoa Butter

Phase B

  • 23.5% Apricot Kernel Oil

Phase C

  • 1% Maple Almond Fragrance Oil

  • 0.5% Vitamin E

  • 60% Brown Sugar

400 gram Recipe

Phase A

  • 40 grams Cetyl Alcohol

  • 20 grams Cocoa Butter

Phase B

  • 94 grams Apricot Kernel Oil

Phase C

  • 4 grams Maple Almond Fragrance Oil

  • 2 grams Vitamin E

  • 240 grams Brown Sugar

Directions;

  • Combine all ingredients in phase A in a heat safe bowl.

  • Create a water bath to melt everything in phase A. You will need to mix phase A periodically to help melt everything. (Water bath; Fill a pan with an inch or so of water and place the bowl in the pan of water and place the pan on your stove top on medium heat.)

  • Once everything is melted remove bowl from heat and pour in phase B. Let it harden. I put mine in the freezer, but don’t leave it for too long, you don’t want it to get too hard or else you won’t be able to mix it. If it does get too hard, melt it back down.

  • Once it has hardened on the top layer, but still soft inside, you can mix with a hand mixer.

  • Add in all of the phase C ingredients and mix in between each ingredient.

  • Scoop into desired jar.

  • Scrub may harden a bit over time, but I haven’t noticed to much of a change since the day I initially made it. The scrub is still easy to scoop out with my hands and spread on the skin. It smells absolutely amazing and it is really getting me in the spirit for cooler comfy winter days.

Benefits of Each Ingredient;

Coconut Oil - adds a bit of structure to scrub (not if coconut oil melts in your environment though) Emollient

Cocoa Butter - Emollient and adds structure to scrub.

Apricot Kernel Oil - Emollient. Making sure you add some oil keeps the scrub from being too hard.

Cetyl Alcohol - adds structure/hardness to scrub. Use more if you want the scrub to be harder. Is also an emollient.

Sugar - Exfoliant

Vitamin E - antioxidants, helps keep oils from going rancid.

Substitutes;

Coconut Oil - try using 1% cetyl alcohol in place of it and the rest of the percentage use a liquid oil

Cocoa Butter - any butter of choice, but all butters have a different hardness, so keep that in mind. Kokum butter Is harder than cocoa butter, but cocoa butter is harder than shea butter.

Apricot Kernel Oil - any oil of choice that is not to heavy like jojoba oil, olive oil, grapeseed oil, safflower oil, etc.

Cetyl Alcohol - Cetearyl Alcohol, Behenyl Alcohol, Stearic Acid (these will have different hardnesses so experiment with percentages. Stearic acid will harden the product much more than cetyl, so use less of it.)

Vitamin E - no sub, but you can leave out.
