A History
In 1910 the micellar water technology was born due to the hard tap water in Paris, France. It wasn’t until 1995 Bioderma created the first commercially available Micellar water.
Now today, we have all kinds of different Micellar waters on the market.
Originally these were designed to be, no rinse.
But, if you haven’t noticed, in the beauty industry brands love to take a product and create hybrids of it. So there are basically a lot of what I like to call “makeup remover / micellar water hybrids.” These are micellar waters specifically marketed as a makeup remover or a first step in your double cleansing routine.
When I think of using a waterless cleanser I imagine, using it in the morning when I am exhausted and have to be somewhere fast and don’t have enough time to wash my face. A quick wipe of a micellar water and BAM! No need to wash your face with water.
Or maybe, you relate to the people in Paris in 1910 and your skin is just super irritated from your hard water and washing it all the time, BAM! Use a micellar water.
If you want to wash off your micellar water after using it, go for it! There are tons of hybrid micellar water / makeup removers out there, and some, might just work better for you if you wash them off after.

Secret ingredient to making Micellar Waters
Original Micellar Waters are made with a gentle surfactant like PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides. This is a type of surfactant that DOES NOT need washed off the skin. There are so many different types of surfactants, some lather, some emulsify, some solubilize, some help spreadability. So they all aren’t just these cleansing bubbly ingredients that need washed away. Some are okay to stay on the skin.
Since there are all kinds of micellar water hybrids out there, some are made with more harsh surfactants that your skin personally, might not be able to handle. Some may be able to handle them though. Always patch test.
My skin tingles with I use some commercial micellar waters. So I have to wash them away. Micellar water isn’t even a part of my skincare routine.

What are Bi Phase Micellar Waters?
Bi phase micellar waters, have a small layer of oil separated from the formula.
Before using, shake bottle to blend the oil and water together. These are great for removing waterproof makeup. Often used as a first step in double cleansing as a makeup remover.
Surfactants found in Bi Phase Micellar Waters
Emollients found in Bi Phase Micellar Waters
You want to use emollients that aren’t too heavy and does a good job at breaking up makeup. I did see some on the market using natural oils like Castor Oil. This would work if you are okay with this product feeling more heavy or if you are okay with having to wash it off after. It’s up to you. Just know that different emollients can cause the micellar water to perform different. If yours isn’t removing makeup well, try a different emollient. Isohexadecane specifically claims to be good at removing makeup.
