Formula;
Phase A
76.2% Distilled Water
0.3% Disodium EDTA
5% Glycerin
3% Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI)
+ Salt to thicken - adjust formula to your liking.
Phase B
0.5% Liquid Germall Plus (INCI: Propylene Glycol, Diazolidinyl Urea, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate)
Directions;
In a sanitized beaker combine all the ingredients on order. Mix until the Disodium EDTA is fully dissolved before adding in the next ingredient.

After adding in the Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate mix as best as you can to incorporate the powder. It will not dissolve until we heat it up.
Cover your beaker with aluminum foil and place in a water bath. (A pan with water placed over your stove top.)

Heating up your formula allows for the Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate to incorporate into the other ingredients faster. You can also try letting it sit overnight if you don’t want to heat it.
Remove from heat and mix. Let cool to 104°F / 40°C before adding in the preservative in Phase B.

If you want to thicken your body wash, you can use Regular Table Salt. Here is my video that goes into depth on how to thicken body washes with salt. If you change out the surfactants it may not work. Only some surfactants thicken with salt. In this post, I go into detail about which ones do and which doesn’t.

How to add in Salt to thicken
Only add in 0.3% - 0.5% of salt at a time. If you add too much you can actually make the product thin again. So make sure you add in 0.3% - 0.5% at a time and mix it in and give your product a second to thicken. If it’s not thick enough add in another 0.3% - 0.5% salt, mix it in, and let it sit for a second. Keep doing this until you get your desired consistency. Make sure you keep track of how much salt you add in each time you add it in. Once you know how much salt gets you to your desired viscosity you can rewrite the formula to account for that amount.
Important note - It’s recommended to pre-dissolve the salt in distilled water before adding it into your body wash. This way the salt fully dissolves.

Benefits / Uses of Ingredients;
Distilled Water - diluent
Disodium EDTA - chelating agent. Learn all about Chelating Agents HERE
Glycerin - humectant that hydrates the skin
Cocamidopropyl Betaine - amphoteric surfactant that helps increase lather and foam and stronger bubbles. This surfactant also reacts to salt, not all surfactants thicken using salt.
Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) - Gentle anionic surfactant, also known as Baby foam as it is so gently it’s used in baby products. This is a powder that needs to be mixed in with a liquid surfactant to “dissolve” This surfactant thickens with salt, not all surfactants will do this.
Liquid Germall Plus - preservative
Substitutes;
Keep in mind that these are just suggestions. Formula may not hold up as well, but may still hold up enough for DIY personal use. Use only cosmetic grade ingredients.
Distilled Water - hydrosol or aloe vera gel (these usually have a lower pH, this can effect the viscosity of the gel.
Glycerin - Propanediol 1,3
Cocamidopropyl Betaine - try Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine, Coco Betaine, Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine
Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) - Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSA), Sodium Cocoyl Methyl Taurate
Liquid Germall Plus - Learn all about preservatives HERE to figure out which would be the right choice for your formula. e.g. Euxyl PE 9010, Opiphen Plus, Geogard ECT. Keep in mind changing the preservative could change the clarity of the product. Some preservatives also need mixed with a solubilizer of solvent to mix into water. Make adjustments to the formula if needed to accommodate a different preservative.
